During the last week of term, we visited Reading Museum’s Victorian School room. It was fun, educational and we felt as if we had returned to the Victorian period!
First, we got dressed up in collars and waistcoats (for the boys) and pinafores (for the girls) - we all looked great! Our “School Master” instructed us to behave exactly how children of that time would have done. We had to be “seen and not heard” and we weren’t allowed to speak unless instructed to do so! It was harder for some of us than others!
We had a Victorian maths lesson where we explored the old currency and had to use slates to show our workings, the noise put our teeth on edge! *Cringe*
After that, we did some copying from the board using liquid ink. We were covered! I’m sure our parents can attest to that! We tried a different way of learning our spellings where most of us had to stifle our giggles! Haha! If we were left-handed, we had to write with our right! That included me (Dylan) AND Miss. Davies - who was even told off for it! :’)
Suddenly, the mood changed and I (Alonso) was picked out for my unsavoury behaviour (as part of the role-play) and I was (pretend) caned in front of the class - but I couldn’t help but laugh!
All in all, it was a great day and it really brought our topic to life.
Until next time,
Alonso and Dylan (6 Lewis)
